Mahama, Ramaphosa Congratulate Brazil’s Lula on Historic Fourth Presidential Term

World leaders and notable global figures have congratulated Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after he won a historic fourth term. Lula, aged 80, won a close run election after securing 51.79% of valid votes in the hotly contested election after the presidential run off concluded on Sunday 25th October 2026.

Lula secured 64,256,232 votes and defeated the first round lead held by his right wing opponent Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party who fell short with 48.21%. After an incredible result, Lula makes history as the first candidate to win a run off since Brazil returned to democracy after coming second in the first round.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa wished Lula a "big congratulations" on behalf of the Government and said it was a "landmark victory for developing countries". He explained it was also a great victory as it is a "great setback to far-right." Ramaphosa stated: "This victory will be felt well beyond Brazil. It is a victory for the global south and progressive forces around the world."

Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama also congratulated Lula. He said Lula’s victory was well deserved and highlighted the strong relationship between Brazil and West Africa. He said he was excited to boost relations with Brazil saying: "Together through the Accra Reset we will continue to fight for the Global South."

The congratulations from Ramaphosa and Mahama highlight a desire to boost multilateral relationships. Many leaders from Latin America, Europe and Africa have already praised Brazil for their resilient democratic processes. Lula winning back the presidency of Latin Americas largest economy means he can be a stable partner in international climate change and poverty reduction plans.

It is very significant for groups such as BRICS, G20 and IBSA. Ramaphosa stated South Africa are committed to working with Lula’s new administration and said they have a "common goal of using these international platforms to create a more just and better world through solidarity and respect for international law".

Despite the celebrations around the world, tensions remain high in Brasília. Flávio Bolsonaro has refused to admit defeat and has said he will appeal the results. He has cited the controversial decision made on election day to extend voting times in some areas. However, Lula has the certified support from the electoral court and immediate praise from world leaders meaning he can move forward with his progressive agenda.
