Heavy Rain and Register Discrepancies Mark Intense NDC Executive Elections at Dome-Kwabenya Atomic Park as Aspirants express procedural distress and optimism equally.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) conducted its highly anticipated Dome-Kwabenya Constituency Executive Elections at the Atomic Park polling centre on Saturday, October 24, 2026, amid logistical delays and severe weather disruptions. The internal election, part of the party's broader national reorganization roadmap, drew hundreds of local delegates eager to choose a new executive team to lead the constituency into the next electoral cycle. As a critical political battleground in the Greater Accra Region, the atmosphere at Atomic Park remained charged with high stakes and intense intra-party competition throughout the day.

The electoral process experienced an early setback when voting failed to start at the officially scheduled time of 8:00 AM. Thousands of delegates and multiple aspirants were initially left waiting in long queues at the Atomic Park gates while party representatives worked behind closed doors. The official opening of the ballot boxes was eventually pushed back by two hours, officially commencing around 11:00 AM.

Among the most closely watched races of the day was the contest for the Constituency Chairmanship, a position central to mobilizing the grassroots. In an interaction with NEWS+ Global, former Branch Communications Officer who was contesting for the Constituency Chairmanship position, Mr. Osman Hasum believes there is a leadership gab and needs an individual who is competent, trustworthy, loved and cherished to lead the constituency.

He however expressed grave dissatisfaction with the electoral process which had forced some early voters to leave the voting centre without casting their votes for other pressing assignments due to the delay in commencing the election process. He added as constituency chairman he would rally all members and executive team together to focus on the common goal of ensuring that the sitting Member of Parliament Hon. Faustina Elikplim Akukurugu retains the seat in the 2028 general elections.

Jerry Yao Ayimah who was contesting the Constituency Treasurer position was optimistic of victory but indicated the election was about the party and not about any individual and therefore urged all aspirants to converge and work together regardless of who wins what as the process was not to satisfy individual interest but that of the NDC party and constituency. He pledged to work together with the NDC Dome-Kwabenya constituency team to fight with every tool in its arsenal against who ever the NPP fields to contest the NDC in order to retain the constituency seat.

Meanwhile Abaa Sadat Ami-itiba who was contesting for the Deputy constituency Organiser position believes the party needed a person in his caliber with experienced hands, a person who understands grassroot organization in order to do the harder work other executives would not do in order for the NDC to retain the Dome-Kwabenya constituency. He indicated that when a party is in government party organisation is more difficult than when the [arty is in opposition because party members tern to relax and lose the urge to fight as hard as they did when they were in opposition, and this is what he will correct in order to continue to put the party on its toes going into the 2028 general elections.

Another aspirant vying for the Deputy Communications Officer position, Benson Sena Dumoga, equally expressed dissatisfaction about the electoral process suggesting the process should have been postponed owing to the fact that five polling centers which were promised to ease pressure was reduced to a single polling center while delaying the voting time without making provisions for lightening system incase the sorting, counting and announcements of results further delayed the process into the night. He was however optimistic of winning the election for his prescribed political office portfolio.

Heavily armed personnel from the Ghana Police Service, supported by teams from the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, maintained strict outer perimeters and handled crowd control.

Before the main executive voting began, security chiefs held a comprehensive operational briefing at Atomic Park to outline safety protocols and emergency procedures. This heightened security framework proved vital as tensions simmered over the voter register corrections. High-profile party figures also arrived to monitor the baseline dynamics, including NDC National Youth Organiser aspirant Steven Nhyira Odarteifio, who emphasized the strategic value of the constituency.

Just as voting began to pick up momentum in the early afternoon, a heavy downpour swept through the Dome-Kwabenya municipality. The torrential rain quickly flooded the open-air layout of Atomic Park, scattering party faithful and leaving the immediate environment wet and littered with debris. The adverse weather threatened to halt the democratic exercise entirely as electoral materials faced potential water damage.

Displaying notable resilience, officials from the Electoral Commission and party organizers quickly adapted by relocating key polling stations beneath a large, reinforced tent. Election workers braved the downpour to clear the flooded zones while keeping the ballot lines moving. Delegates stood closely packed under the temporary shelters, determined to cast their votes despite the uncomfortable physical conditions.

The voting eventually progressed past the initial bottlenecks, with delegates successfully concluding the early segments allocated for electing youth and women organizers. Attention then pivoted fully toward the sorting, counting, and declaration of the principal executive roles, including the chairman, secretary, and communications officers. The manual collation process meant that counting stretched deep into the evening hours under the watchful eyes of party agents.

As the exercise drew to a close, party leaders expressed confidence that the successfully executed election at Atomic Park would consolidate the NDC's presence in Dome-Kwabenya. The resilience shown by voters through register disputes and severe weather underscores the party’s determination to present a unified front. The newly elected executive body will face the immediate task of reconciling local factions and preparing the constituency machinery for future general elections.
