At Accra in 1958, Gamal was born to Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah (née Fathia Ritzk). He spent his adolescence years in the crossroads of modern African politics and history, growing up around his father, who would later become one of the continent’s most influential independence leaders. Gamal and his brothers were in Egypt and other foreign countries for the majority of his growing years after his father was overthrown in the 1966 coup.

Moreover, he frequently covers topics related to Africa, the Middle East, and the politics of the developing world in his articles for Al-Ahram Weekly.

Additionally, he has written hundreds of commentaries and essays on African and international affairs throughout his illustrious career in journalism. For many years, he has been writing about contemporary African issues, as well as African and Middle East affairs, in order to carry out his father’s philosophy. He advocated for regional economic integration and a united front to confront modern challenges such as industrialization and globalization.

He is survived by his younger siblings, Samia Nkrumah, a prominent Ghanaian politician who previously served as the Member of Parliament for Jomoro and chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and Sekou Nkrumah, a writer and political activist based in Accra. Diplomatic representatives, state officials, and independent media networks across West Africa continue to extend their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
