Electricity Company of Ghana Unveils USSD Code to Authenticate Staff Ahead of Audit.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a nationwide meter audit exercise across all its operational areas. The utility campaign aims to radically reduce commercial losses, improve the state's revenue assurance, and aggressively combat illegal electrical connections and electricity theft throughout the country. During this exercise, field officers will inspect both prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations, and all associated electrical wiring systems.

In a public announcement issued from its headquarters, the utility provider explicitly clarified that the broadcast serves as the formal and final directive for the public. ECG stressed that no individual advance notifications, appointment letters, or separate notice letters will be delivered to properties. Consequently, landlords, property managers, tenants, and security personnel are urged to grant authorized field teams prompt access and not use the absence of a distinct warning letter to restrict entry.

While cooperating with the inspection team is paramount, ECG has strongly cautioned the public to remain highly vigilant against criminals seeking to exploit the exercise through impersonation and fraud. To protect homes and businesses from utility scams, the management stated that every genuine field employee or authorized external agent will move with a visible, official ECG identification card. Property owners are strictly advised to double-check these physical IDs before allowing access to any metering installations on their premises.

Going a step further to fortify customer security, ECG has launched a secure digital authentication platform via a mobile shortcode service. By utilizing the *official 226# USSD service on any mobile network, consumers can independently and instantly verify if an individual claiming to be from the power company is truly authorized. This tech-driven solution eliminates guesswork and actively shuts down potential extortion loops or fake meter seller scams.

Authenticating a visiting worker requires only a few steps on a mobile phone. First, dial *226# and select Option 5, which is designated for "Verify Staff". Afterward, the customer must input the unique six-digit verification code provided by the visiting field officer. Within seconds, the system will output the officer's full legal name, region, and operational district directly onto the mobile screen for immediate cross-checking.

The Electricity Company of Ghana encourages all customers to finalize this digital verification protocol prior to opening their doors or gates. If the digital network prompts or physical credentials seem suspicious, or if the details do not perfectly align, entry must be firmly denied. Customers can immediately report suspicious individuals by contacting the main ECG Customer Service Centre at 0302 611 611 to preserve local community safety and uphold billing integrity.
