Cristiano Ronaldo Faces 1-6 Month Ban After Walkout Over Nations League Bench Role.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has suspended Cristiano Ronaldo on a provisional basis after he quit the squad’s international camp abruptly last month. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) Non-Professional Section ruled on the non-automatic preventive measure on October 9, 2026, describing it as an “urgent” matter. The 41-year-old team captain was under heavy criticism after abandoning the squad’s Copenhagen base before a crucial UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.
The fallout from Ronaldo’s decision comes amid an intense row with Portugal’s new head coach, Jorge Jesus. The Al-Nassr FC striker was an unused substitute as Portugal beat Norway.
After he learned that he would again miss out if he came on the bench for the friendly against Denmark, Ronaldo walked out of the squad. He posted a nearly 2,000-word message on Instagram criticizing Jesus for twice “breaking his word” about his team position and accusing Jesus of “absolute breach of trust.” Ronaldo apologized to his teammates and supporters for his outburst and accepted that he should be disciplined for deserting the training camp without permission. According to the FPF rules, players who fail to appear or deliberately walk out of active international duty face a one to six-month ban and hefty fines.
FPF President Pedro Proença called on fans to remain calm as the federation investigates the matter. He reminded them that disciplinary proceedings have begun before the Disciplinary Investigation Commission and said they still want the team captain to appear. Meanwhile, coach Jorge Jesus has left the discussion open for a potential reconciliation but has declined to comment directly on Ronaldo’s social media accusations.
Ronaldo has denied that this controversy will cut short his incredible international career. The veteran forward has scored a remarkable 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal and is determined to score his 1,000th career goal. Ronaldo proved that he is in fine form as he netted his 980th career goal in Al-Nassr’s 3-0 win over Diriyah Club last week.
