15-YEAR-OLD ASTECH STUDENT DIES DURING SCHOOL SPORTING ACTIVITY

A 15-year-old first-year student of Ada Senior High Technical School (ASTECH), Monde Konedu Agyemang, has died after reportedly collapsing during a sporting activity organised by the school as part of its Girls’ Education Week celebration. The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with the student reportedly pronounced dead upon arrival at the Sege Polyclinic.
The Ada West District Director of Education, Dr. Stephen Arthur, who confirmed the incident, said the student was rushed to the health facility after she fell during the activity. According to him, the school’s headmaster was away attending a conference of heads when the incident occurred and subsequently contacted him to provide support and report on the situation.
Dr. Arthur said he informed the District Chief Executive, and the two visited the health facility, where a medical doctor briefed them on the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. “The doctor told us that when the girl was brought to the facility, her vital signs were checked, but none was responding,” he recounted.
The medical doctor reportedly indicated that the student died at about 7:35 a.m. Dr. Arthur said school authorities and officials subsequently returned to the school to arrange a more humane way of breaking the news to the family. He explained that the student’s elder sister, who lives in Accra, was contacted and initially told that her younger sister was unwell and had been admitted to the hospital.
The sister was asked to come to Sege, where she was taken to the health facility. A medical doctor then explained the circumstances surrounding the death to her.
According to the Director of Education, the family was later allowed to see the body before the matter was referred to the Sege Police Station for the necessary investigations. He said a police officer accompanied the relevant officials back to the hospital, where the body was examined before it was transferred to the General Hospital.
Dr. Arthur disclosed that arrangements were being made to obtain a court order for an autopsy to establish the cause of death. He stressed that the actual cause of the student’s death remained unknown and urged the public to exercise patience until the medical investigations were completed.
“We need to be patient and wait for the medical team to finish. The autopsy report will indicate what happened to the girl,” he said.
The Director of Education further disclosed that the student had enrolled at ASTECH only about three weeks before the incident and was a boarder. He said the school’s admission form contained a section asking parents or guardians to indicate whether their children had any known health conditions, adding that the form available to the school indicated that no health condition had been declared.
He cautioned against drawing conclusions about the cause of death before the outcome of the investigations.
In an especially heartbreaking development, Dr. Arthur said the student’s mother had indicated that October 15, the day of the incident, was her daughter’s 15th birthday. He described the incident as a painful moment for the school community and all those involved in responding to the tragedy.
Police investigations and the planned autopsy are expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. The cause of death has not yet been officially established.
